When exposed to fire, FR clothing will not spread flame as quickly as cotton/polyester clothing, thus provide more escape time and may increase chance of survival.
In the event of a flash fire, which ignites suddenly and can be over in seconds, an FR garment will self-extinguish in seconds after the fire, whereas a cotton/polyester garment continues to burn and causes more injury to the wearer.
